It is important to establish sound working procedures when working remotely to prevent burnout, overwork, and a decline in your health. At Fetchly, everyone is encouraged to have fun while working, and also to prioritize mental and physical well-being. Yasmin from the QA department shares her experience with some practices she follows while working remotely to maintain a healthy lifestyle. She talked about some steps she took that later became routine habits such as drinking water regularly, working out, eating healthy, and even having a sun time once in a while. According to Yasmin, It is more important to be consistent in this rather than radical, starting with the easy changes, taking baby steps, and implementing the big ones with time.
Good health positively affects the quality of life. Therefore, it's a general notion that maintaining a healthy habit benefits people's mental and physical well-being. But how come so many people don't make healthy choices?
As humans, we are always trying to push past our limits, while still trying to maintain a comfortable life. This is one of the reasons why implementing anything new or different into our routine is often challenging and demands a lot of work. That being said, it comes as no surprise that we would eventually reach our limit.
By the way, I work for a remote company called Fetchly as a Q.A.. Working for Fetchly has been excellent for me because the company is constantly encouraging us to have fun while we work, and also to prioritize our mental and physical well-being.
There are several healthy habits a remote worker can develop to maintain a stable mental state and at the same time stay productive. One model I use to explain the importance of healthy habits is the WWH (Why What, and How) method.
It is a simple laid-out pattern of questions, you need to ask yourself and if possible find the answers to those questions. simply;
-
Why have healthy habits?
-
What are the most important healthy habits to maintain?
-
How to maintain good health habits?
Why have healthy habits?
Developing healthy habits can help to improve your self-image and stabilize your physical and mental health. In addition, you can still maintain a high level of productivity.
You might be able to learn more quickly and be a problem-solving machine when you develop a healthy lifestyle. The brain becomes more productive and active as healthy behaviors can provide your body with the necessary vitamins as well as boost your immune system.
Also, maintaining good health habits can help to develop a strong physique, resist infections, and keep you protected from common diseases.
How I maintain healthy habits
To be honest, I come from a family that has always emphasized the importance of making healthy choices. As a result, I've always practiced athletics and ate well. Because I’ve become accustomed to these healthy practices from childhood, they stayed with me even up to adulthood.
As it relates to working remotely, I also do my best to maintain a few healthy routines highlighted below:
-
Drink water - I always have a bottle of water on my desk, when I work and it has become a habit. Learning and keeping small habits like this will have a major impact on you.
-
Workout - I’ve always had the habit of exercising, playing sports, or even taking a quick stroll around the block since I was a kid, and I do this now as part of my daily routine. I also have a workout partner who holds me accountable so I always keep to my workout routine.
-
Eat Healthily - I’m not talking about a diet, but better choices and smart changes. I usually have a full meal with veggies, fruit, and natural orange juice.
-
Sleep well - I normally get at least 8 hours of sleep each night, usually around 10 pm, and wake up at 6.30 am every day to maintain a good sleep schedule and to recharge my energy. Getting enough sleep promotes hormone balance and enhances physical performance.
-
Sun Time - Regularly spending a few minutes out in the sun helps put me in a better mood, and at the same time increases vitamin D.
-
Take care of mental health - I enjoy working in a clean and organized environment since it puts me in a good mood and keeps me productive. Doing so has taught me that it's just as important to maintain excellent physical health as well as mental health.
It is more important to be consistent than radical and start with the easy changes, take baby steps, and implement the big ones with time. Think more about your routine. Make the routine work for you and not the opposite. Think about how to implement the changes and how they would work in your day, week, and month. Organize your goals and what is needed to finally get there.
